RYA Powerboat Courses


RYA LEVEL 1 POWERBOAT COURSE (PB1)

This course is for complete beginners and will be run as required.

RYA LEVEL 2 POWERBOAT COURSE (PB2)

Provides the skills and background knowledge needed by the competent powerboat driver and is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence. It aims to teach boat handling and seamanship in powerboats. It focuses on low speed close quarters handling, man overboard recovery, an introduction to driving at planing speed, and collision regulations. The course can be taken at inland or coastal location. It may be conducted in a variety of boat types, both planing and displacement. The certificate issued will be endorsed to show the type of boat in which the training took place.

Assumed knowledge: None. May be preceded by Level 1 Start Powerboating Minimum duration: 2 days
Minimum age: 16(candidates under the age of 16 must be Club Assistant Instructors and will be issued with an endorsed certificate)
Course content: Launching and recovery, boat handling, securing to a buoy, anchoring, leaving and coming alongside, man overboard
Ability after course: Self-sufficient powerboater in the right conditions, aware of own limitations and those of the craft

What's included: On successful completion a PB2 certificate and logbook

RYA LEVEL 2 DIRECT ASSESSMENT COURSE

A one day assessment covering the RYA Level 2 Syllabus for experienced helms but who have no powerboat qualifications.On completion students are awarded a RYA Level 2 Certificate.

RYA courses are run mainly in the river with 1 - 2 hours in the Solent for the Level 2 courses. On completion of the Level 2 RYA courses, club members will be encouraged to take a 1 day, club specific certificated safety boat course.

Course details, including timings will be emailed to applicants approximately 2 weeks beforehand.
